Weekdays

Midweek, Bowness is quieter and laid-back.

On the water. The lake cruises leave from Bowness Pier, about seven or eight minutes’ walk from the park gate. The Red Cruise to Ambleside takes 75 minutes, the Islands Cruise is a 45-minute loop from Bowness, and the Yellow Cruise runs to Lakeside in 90 minutes, with combined tickets for the steam railway or the aquarium.

The World of Beatrix Potter

About four minutes from the park gate, open every day.

Up high

Brant Fell rises straight above Bowness, about 20 minutes uphill from the park. Orrest Head, above Windermere town, is the other classic viewpoint.

Your own boards

The park has its own access to the water’s edge. Bring paddleboards or a kayak.

Further out

Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts house, is about 2.6 km away. Ambleside, Hawkshead, Grasmere, Coniston and Kendal are all within easy reach.
